Keylong

Keylong is the administrative centre of the Lahul-Spiti District of Himachal Pradesh. It does not have any antiquities, but several hamlets nearby house significant Buddhist artefacts and stupas of early date.

Shimla

Shimla was selected by the British colonial government to become the summer residence of the viceroy. The town reflects colonial architecture and town planning. Despite of lack of monuments predating that era, Shimla as the state capital of Himachal Pradesh is the location of the ASI State Museum which houses a number of significant artefacts from all areas of the state, especially the Kullu and Shimla Districts.

Bilaspur

The town of Bilaspur is not only the capital of the district of the same name it also has a number of old temples. Unfortunately, those monuments were built nearby the Sutlej River on sand. Thus, some of them are sunken and partly under ground. Even worse, during rain season and for most of the following months the whole area next to the river is under water – and the temples completely invisible.

Mandi

The history of Mandi goes back to times of early Tantrism. It is relevant in particular for the Tibetan Buddhists as Padmasambhava, the great master of the later Nyingma Order, is supposed to have meditated there. Mandi retained its fame as a Tantric centre during its Brahmanic perid. It serves as a district capital of the same name, and a number of significant elements of its urban structure remind of the colonial period.

Kangra

Kangra has been a royal capital for centuries as its fort is located at a strategic and well-defendable spot next to the conflux of the Bener and Majhi Rivers. Nearby the highest point of the fort, the surviving walls of two ruined Hindu temples recall the cultural and religious significance of the town and its fortification.

Chamba

Regarding the number of monuments and cultural relics from the early history (7th-12th centuries) of Himachal Pradesh, Chamba Town is probably the place with the greatest number of monuments and artefacts. Placed at the conflux of the Ravi and the Sal Rivers, the topography provided a natural defence system. The urban landscape is dominated by a number of nagara temples, in particular the Lakshmi-Narayan Complex, the Caughan Green with its adjacent colonial architecture, and the Palace of the kings of Chamba.
